Europe’s Trumpists warm up for EU elections with series of rallies.
Eurosceptics Rally Across Europe: A Closer Look at NatCon24, Budapest CPAC, and Bucharest Conference
In a whirlwind of Eurosceptic fervor, conservative and far-right leaders are gearing up to make their voices heard across Europe in a series of rallies and conferences set to shake up the political landscape. From Brussels to Budapest, and Bucharest, these events are poised to amplify calls for the protection of national sovereignty and push back against what they perceive as the encroachment of Brussels' bureaucracy and "wokeism".
Kicking off the lineup is the much-anticipated National Conservatism Conference 2024, affectionately dubbed 'NatCon24', scheduled for April 16-17 in Brussels. Despite facing pressure from various quarters, including anti-fascist organizations and local authorities, the conference organized by the Washington-based Edmund Burke Foundation is set to proceed at Claridge in Brussels. With a theme centered on 'Preserving the Nation-State in Europe', NatCon24 promises to be a platform for Europe's Eurosceptic leaders to articulate their vision for the continent.
Headline participants include former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, France’s Presidential candidate Eric Zemmour, and the formidable Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. Orbán, a staunch ally of former US President Donald Trump, is expected to be a highlight of the event, reinforcing his stance against Brussels' dominance and advocating for a return to national sovereignty.
Meanwhile, Zemmour, echoing Trump's sentiments, positions himself as a staunch opponent of "Islamisation", "European bureaucracy", and "woke ideology". With a focus on preserving cultural identity and history, Zemmour aligns himself closely with the former US President, drawing parallels between their visions for their respective nations.
Following hot on the heels of NatCon24, Budapest will play host to the European iteration of the American Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) on April 25-26. Spearheaded by Orbán himself, this event will bring together conservative activists and politicians from both sides of the Atlantic. With a guest list featuring figures like Geert Wilders, Santiago Abascal, and Tom van Grieken, the gathering aims to foster collaboration among like-minded individuals while explicitly rejecting "woke" influences.
Simultaneously, Romania's rising far-right party AUR will organize its own conference in Bucharest on April 27-28, under the banner of 'Make Europe Great Again'. Drawing inspiration from Trump's rhetoric, the conference will see participation from prominent Eurosceptic voices across Europe, alongside controversial figures like Robert Malone, known for spreading misinformation during the COVID-19 pandemic.
With themes ranging from challenging EU establishment to asserting national identity, these events underscore the growing momentum of Eurosceptic sentiments across the continent. As conservative and far-right leaders converge to rally against perceived threats to sovereignty and cultural heritage, the stage is set for a spirited debate over the future direction of Europe.
